This article deals with the study of the Escuela de Comunicación Social of the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia; the Escuela Documental in Santa Fe, Argentina; the Departamento de Cine of the Universidad de Los Andes in Mérida, Venezuela; and the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires. The aim of this article is to outline a brief itinerary of the schools of documentary films in Latin America. In this way, through these four institutions we can learn about the importance of the “school” in the history of the Latin American documentary film. From a historical viewpoint and the analysis of meaningful productions, we will look for comparable aspects between these institutions and analyze how the audiovisual technologies expand the documentary film towards other territories.
