Abstract

This article is a preview of a larger project on characters from what might be called melonoir. Now, I research into the male character who could be the opposite of the rumberas. This is the "cinturita" (little waist), a nickname attributed to a type of cinematic character as well as to a womanizer and exhibitionist who hung around the cabarets of urban and suburban areas, primarily in Mexico City. To this end, I undertake the task of addressing part of the internal structure of the imaginary of this brief cinematic movement: that which is formed by the star, the character, and their social referent, analyzed from the categories of identification and projection that a hypothetical viewer might have. The goal is to examine the typical characters and typical situations that comprise them and reconstruct the structure of this symbolic system.
